In Baku, Azerbaijan, his last stop in the region, Serageldin visited Baku State University (BSU), where he signed Memorandum of Understanding between the Library of Alexandria and BSU, and gave a joint lecture on Mutual Understanding and Dialogue between Civilizations, with Vaira Vike-Freiberga, former President of Latvia, and Roza Otunbayeva, former President of Kyrgyzstan.

Ismail Serageldin has signed a Memorandum of Understanding between the Bibliotheca Alexandrina and the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences. The two institutions have agreed to cooperate with each other in areas of mutual interest such as support of research, training programs, scientific exchanges, fellowships, seminars and workshops.

In Ganja, Azerbaijan, home of the ancient Azeri poet Nizami Ganjavi, Serageldin co-chaired, together with Abulfaz Garayev, Minister of Culture and Tourism of Azerbaijan, an international conference dedicated to the 870th Anniversary of the poet. Among the eminent speakers at the conference were Vaira Vike-Freiberga, former President of Latvia and Roza Otunbayeva, former President of Kyrgyzstan. The conference publications bore the logo of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina.

In Tbilisi, Serageldin gave a lecture at each of the Georgian capital’s main universities: the University of Georgia, Ilia State University, where he also signed a Memorandum of Understanding , and the Free University of Tblisi. During his two-day stay in Tbilisi he also visited the National Library of Georgia, the National Academy of Sciences and met with Nikoloz Rurua, Minister of Culture and Tourism.

On the second day of his visit to Ankara, Serageldin was welcomed at Bilkent University by Rector Ali Dogramaci, and at the Turkish National Academy of Science by Ahmet Cevat ACAR, president of the Academy. On his second visit to the Turkish Parliament he met with MP Mahir Ünal Head of Turkey/Egypt Inter-parliamentary group and Deputy Chairman AKP Party Group at Parliament.

Serageldin joins the International Jury of the Chirac Foundation to select this year’s winners of the Prize for Conflict Prevention. The selection is to be made after meeting with a committee of experts who propose a list of individuals or institutions that have taken exemplary and urgent action towards prevention of clash in areas of potential conflict.

The International Social Science Council (ISSC) has invited Ismail Serageldin to become a member of the Scientific Advisory Committee to the World Social Science Report 2013. Produced by the ISSC and co-published with UNESCO, the report will focus on global environmental change and is scheduled for launch at the October 2013 UNESCO General Conference.

The BA hosts, on 8 and 9 August 2012, the first meeting of the African Union (AU) High Level Panel on Science, Technology and Innovation which will guide the AU on the review process of Africa’s Science and Technology Consolidated Plan of Action (CPA).

The African Union Commission has selected Serageldin as member of the high level panel for the review of Africa’s Science and technology Consolidated plan of Action. Established in 2002, the African Union consists of 54 African States. Among its objectives are the achievement of greater unity and solidarity between the African countries and the promotion of peace, security, and stability on the continent.

As member of the Encyclopedia of Life (EOL) Executive Committee, Serageldin was invited to the 2012 Meeting organized by the Biodiversity Committee, Chinese Academy of Sciences, held in Beijing on 25 and 26 July 2012. The Committee members, who are senior figures from the cornerstone institutions of the international initiative, convened to discuss future plans for the EOL as it soon enters into its sixth year of providing global access to knowledge about life on Earth.

At the the meeting of the Informal Competitiveness Council of the European Research Council (ERC), Serageldin spoke in the plenary session on EuroMediterranean Cooperation in Research and Innovation. Serageldin and his co-speaker Eduard Brezin, Former President of the French Academy of Sciences, both gave speeches entitled “Enhancing regional collaborations in Research and Innovation – The way forward”; while Serageldin addressed the topic from the Mediterranean countries perspective, Brezin spoke from the EU countries perspective.

At the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, a gathering place for leading experts and scholars from around the world, Serageldin gave a speech entitled “Revolution and Rebirth: the View from Alexandria, Egypt”. He spoke about the role of the reborn Library of Alexandria in helping to promote the values of freedom that were at the heart of Egypt’s revolution, and about the challenges facing the Library in the Arab Spring.
