Serageldin Earns Standing Ovation for Reform Speech

25/03/2005 | Minnesota

Ismail Serageldin brought his audience to a standing ovation as he delivered a spellbinding speech on Arab reform on the occasion of the inaugural Freeman address. He spoke with eloquent passion about why he believes that change in the Arab world must come from within and that one place to start is investing in science and educating women. Serageldin stated that the United States should not try to impose reforms from the outside. Rather, it should help the Arab world engage with the rest of the world in every way possible. He also expressed optimism regarding recent encouraging steps Egypt has taken in the move towards reform. A lively discussion followed in which the audience raised many questions spanning the issue of reform in the Arab world. Serageldins address was broadcast live around the State on the Minnesota Public Radio.
